Open Mic at Troy Bar, Hoxton

Posted: March 24, 2014

Are you looking for a fun, relaxed evening full of live entertainment and music? Do you enjoy open mics? If you do then Troy Bar is certainly the place for you.

Over the hundreds of times I have been to Troy Bar on a Tuesday evening, I have to say honestly, it just gets better and better each time. So here’s how it works;  you pay four pounds at the door, they stamp your wrist (so you can choose to go in and out as you please) and you choose where you want to sit, of course you can order drinks at the bar and ask the waitress for some delicious Caribbean cuisine which will cost you around £6.50.

After you have settled in, the regular DJ will start bumping some music to get you in the mood for what you’re about to experience, meanwhile the band (which have all played for celebrities) will start setting up and once they have, they start playing their theme tune. Don’t worry, once you start becoming a regular you will know the lyrics.

The only downside is because the band has to set up all their equipment, it can start a bit late. However, you still have to be there early because the place is so popular that you will not be able to find a seat which can be really frustrating if you want to see the performances.

One of the most important things to address here is that you can be the entertainment, if you choose to write your name down they call you up on stage and you can express yourself through a song, or poetry or stand-up. Or you can simply sit and watch other people perform.  The place is small and intimate with mood lighting and candles on each table but it’s managed to see a celebrity or two. In fact, I remember when I saw Jessie J perform there before she was famous, and also people such as Teedra Moses, Erykah Badu and most recently Kelis have all been spotted there and have enjoyed themselves.

Troy Bar is at 10 Hoxton Street, N1 6NG and hosts openmic nights every Tuesday from around 10pm - 1am (if you want a seat you have to be there earlier).
